The following was taken from D.W. Thompson’s cemetery journal, Salem Twp, Jefferson County, Ohio Veterans . The following text is “exactly” as it appears in his ledger. The orginal ledger was given to Flora L. VerStraten with permission to copy and extract the data for genealogical use by the chapter.

War Veterans Graves - Revolutionary War

In Richmond United Presbyterian Cemetery are William Hamilton Sr. and Nathan Jones. William Hamilton Sr. was born in 1747 and died Nov. 26, 1840, grave in row 8, stone 9. Nathan Jones died in 1826 and his grave is in row 5.

William Hamilton’s grandson, William S. Hamilton who was the first man in Richmond Ohio to volunteer in the War of the Rebellion going in to company No. 2, O.V.I. April 17, 1861. He was in the first battle of Bull Run, Virginia. He was discharged July 31, 1861 and on Aug. 21, 1861 volunteered and made 2nd Lieutenant of Co. K. 71st O.V.I. He drowned in the Cumberland River below Clarksville on the night of Aug. 19, 1862.

D. W. Thompson’s entries states the following: “He was as brave a soldier as ever drew a sword.” “Unreturned.”

They both had lived on the lot where John Sapp lived in 1970, Salem Twp., Jefferson County, OH.

Revolutionary War Soldiers buried in Salem Twp are:

  1. William McComes, born in Georgia in 1739, Captain of Hartford Militia. Died May 27, 1828, age 89, sec E. (E.S.)
  2. John Andrew died in 1835, row 12, up on hill. (A)
  3. William Hamilton was born Nov. 26, 1747. He died Nov. 26, 1840, age 93, row 9, stone 8. (U.P.R.)
  4. (The Steubenville Chapter D.A.R. say the following 2 Revolutionary Soldiers are buried in East Springfield, Cemetery.) Thomas Calhoun was born in 1735 and died in 1823 at age 88. (E.S.)
  5. Jonathan Potts is listed as being buried in Fairfield. (After researching, I found that he was buried in Fairfield and removed to Steubenville Union Cemetery. He is NOT buried in East Springfield and never was. (F)
  6. Peter Hout was born near Richmond, Ohio in Salem Twp., on Feb 18, 1762 and died June 11, 1813 at age 51. He is buried in (U.C.R.).
  7. Nathan Jones (U.P.R.)
  8. Thomas Minor was born in 1753 and died June 11, 1834. (M.E.R.)
