Carpenter/Oliver and Allied Families

Donated by Evelyn Careen Robinson Thompson Clemens. Her parents were: George Leonard Robinson and Freeda Careen Oliver. The following information was extracted from Evelyn’s Book of Remembrance, dated 16 Sep. 1961 and signed by Owen S. Bunker, Alice J. Bunker and Georgia M. Lewis. Evelyn completed a genealogical course at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was awarded a certificate of graduation which appears on the first page of her remembrance book. Pictured – 50th Wedding Reunion front: James A. Oliver and wife, Jennie E. Carpenter Oliver, 1 son & 5 daughters. [Not known in what order they appear in the photo] - Hazel Marie, Freeda Careen, Mary Mae, Virginia Elizabeth, and one son Ernest Albert. The other man and woman may be the spouses of one son and a daughter.

Albert Oliver Dies at Youngstown Home – Albert Oliver, a native and former resident this county, died at the Youngstown, Ohio, hospital Thursday at 2:30p.m. He had been ill for three weeks and a patient at the hospital eleven days. He was 67 years old Aug 6, 1940. He was born at Rush Run, the son of James and Jennie Carpenter Oliver, who were OLIVER & CARPENTER, continued: early and well known residents of that section. He was married 42 years ago to Emma Burkhead [Barkhart] of Rush Run, who survives with these children: Mrs. W.H. Nuce of Girard, O; Mrs. James L. Sullivan of Youngstown, O; Mrs. Freeda Robinson of Steubenville, O; Ernest Oliver of Follansbee WV; Miss Mary Oliver of Youngstown, O; also these sisters and brothers; Miss Pearl Oliver and John Oliver at Rayland; Mrs. Clyde DeVault at Bridgeport; Mrs. Laura Moore at Glenn Easton WV. He was identified with the Methodist Church. He had been a resident of Mingo Jct., and Dillonvale and was a mine carpenter by occupation; his body has been removed to the Elliot Funeral Home, Steubenville, Ohio. Interment at Smithfield, O. Another obituary reads: James Albert Oliver, a lifelong resident of Warren Twp., passed away Monday, 9 Aug 1926, at his home at Short Creek…from a heart attack. Mr. Oliver was in his 75th year having been born Dec. 28, 1851. He spent nearly his entire life on Short Creek on his farm was the site of one of the oldest woolen mills in the valley, the ruins of which are still to be seen. He was married to Emma Jane Carpenter Oct. 30, 1872…children are; Albert…; Mrs. Margaret J. Toomey of Cumberland Md; Pearl V. of Connelsville, PA; Mrs. Nellie DeVault and Mrs. Ora Hughes of Colerain; Mrs. Laura Moore of Wheeling, WV; and John of Rayland… eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive…

James Albert Oliver was born 28 Dec. 1851 in Warren Twp. His parents were John and Margaret Stuart Oliver. He married Emma Jane Carpenter 30 Oct. 1872 in Steubenville, Ohio. He was buried in Smithfield Cemetery, Smithfield Twp. on the 12th of Aug. 1926. (Death certificate #51079)

Emma Jane Carpenter was born 19 Dec. 1849 at Portland Station, Warren Twp., and her parents were Andrew Jackson and Sarah Jane Marshall Carpenter. She died 23 Apr. 1929 in Bridgeport, Belmont County, Ohio. She is also buried in the Smithfield Cemetery. Their children were: Albertis, born 6 Aug. 1873, died 26 Sep. 1940; Margaret Jane, born 20 Jan. 1877, died 19 Mar. 1940; Pearl Virginia, born 26 Sep 1878, died 23 Sep. 1952; Ora Bell, born 17 Sep. 1882, died 10 Nov. 1935; Nellie Grey, born 9 Jun. 1884, died 26 Aug. 1947; Laura, born 27 Nov. 1885, died 4 Sep. 1967; John R., born 4 Mar. 1890, died 4
Jan. 1951.

John Oliver was born 16 Nov. 1807. He married Margaret Jane Stewart/Steward 4 May 1844 in Wellsville, Ohio. He died on 24 Jan. 1885 and was buried in Smithfield Cemetery on 27 Jan. 1885. Margaret was born 28 Sept. 1825 in Maryland. They had the following children:
v James Albert – born 28 Dec. 1851, Warren Twp., Jefferson County, Ohio who married Emma Jane Carpenter on 4 Nov. 1872 and died on 9 Aug. 1926.
v Mary Ellen – born 15 Dec. 1848 in Warren Twp., Jefferson County, Ohio who married John Thomas Ford on 18 Dec. 1884 and died 15 Sept. 1916,
v Angeline E. – born 1 Apr. 1845, Rayland, Jefferson County, Ohio who married Eliza Cox on 18 Nov. 1866. She died 2 Nov. 1923.
