William L. Rhinehart

The following is the submitters’ great-grandfather and is a member of the Jefferson County Chapter First Families. William L Rhinehart served as a corporal in Co. H in the 98th OVI from 1862 until 1865. The 98th served in the XIVth Corps as part of Granger’s Reserves in the Army of the Cumberland at Chicamauga. After the Chattamooga Campaign, the XIVth was placed under W.T Sherman’s command, where they remained for the duration of the war. William L. Rhinehart was captured at Aiken’s Landing, South Carolina and exchanged. He held the rank of sergeant at the time of his discharge in June of 1865.

William married Martha Winters, born in 1844 Wintersville, Jefferson County, Ohio. She died July 7, 1908 in Steubenville Ohio. She is buried at the Two Ridge Preby. Cemetery (found in the “Tombstones Inscriptions” publication, by author, E. Powell pg. 43).Martha’s parents were; Ross Winters and Elizabeth Welday. The children of William L. Elizabeth Blanche Rhinehart, born Jan 15, 1870 Steubenville, Jefferson, OH. She died Aug 7, 1939 Orange, Essex Co., New Jersey. She married Harmon Hudson McQuilkin.
