Wayne Township HistoryWayne Township was created June 2, 1805 from Archer Township. Archer Township was one of the original townships formed in Jefferson County. It contains 36 full sections. It also included part of Green & German Townships from Harrison County and Salem Township in Jefferson County. Noted for grain, sheep and later rich in coal. Early Pioneer surnames include: Day, Mansfield, Copeland, Dorsey, Blackburn, Stringer, Maxwell, Ong, Wright, Lyon, Coleman, Barrett, Shaw, Tipton, Sprague, Elliott, McNary, Cox, Bell, Hervey, Ferguson, Matthews, Duncan, Merryman, McFerren, Cole, Manly, Vanhorn, Scammehorn, Beebout, Riley, Lyle, Wheeler, and Welday. |
