The following is taken directly from a handwritten ledger kept and recorded by local Salem Township historian, Donald W. Thompson

The Union Cemetery was bought Jan 7, 1881 from William Ford 9&9/100 acres of land for $1,074.90 in Volume 55, page 599 Jefferson Co. deed book, Jan, 22, 1881.

   All people buried in this cemetery that died before April 12, 1881 were removals from other cemeteries.

 Evelyn Cunningham Crew was the first burial in this cemetery April 12, 1881.  She died Dec 17, 1880 was moved from the Quaker Cemetery to Union Sec A, Lot 188.

Ezekiel Cole was born in a brick house on top of the hill in the Richmond Union Cemetery on Feb 9, 1805. He died on May 30, 1887 in his 82nd year.  And by his request his body was committed to mother earth on the spot where he was born in Sec B, Lot #21. 

Antonia Marsona died Dec 4, 1919 and is the oldest person buried in this cemetery at 101 years old.

Elizabeth Waggoner born 1738 is the oldest by birth.  She died Aug 30, 1810. 

By January 1973 there were 1,596 graves in the three cemeteries:

Page 43- Professor John Doyle Rothacker age 28, was killed by a run away horse in front of the present site of Peter Lengyel store.  Richmond O April 30-1898.

Page 40- Elizabeth Parks age 5, burned to death on North Sugar St, Richmond, O June 8-1901.

Page 29- Ralph age 6 and Raymond age 3 Kirkpatrick were drowned by a flash flood on Wills Creek, July 8-1911.

Page 43- Charley Rawlins age 51, Froze to death Jan. 21-1924.

Page 48 & 56- Mary Lee Swickard age 15 and Chester Wiley age 25, were killed in a train and automobile accident at Broadacre O, Aug 22-1928.

Page 11- Ronald R. Carpenter age 7, was killed by Bradly O’Neil’s horse Aug, 12-1949.

Page 9&21- Richard Graham age 26, and Robert Bauersock age 18 and two others were killed on Sunset Blvd. Steubenville O, Nov 18,1955.

Page 42- Daughters of Pete and Minnie Rogers
Nina age 5 - died Dec 4 -1892 with scarlet fever.
Dena age 9 - died Aug 9 -1899 with diphtheria.
Nora age 5 - died Nov 10 -1899 with membrane croup.

Christopher Baker killed June 27-1978 by lightening

Christine Wright killed Dec 20 -1984 2 yrs. auto accident.

      The Union Cemetery was bought Jan 7, 1881 from William Ford 9&9/100 acres of land for $1,074.90 in Volume 55, page 599 Jefferson Co. deed book, Jan, 22, 1881.

   All people buried in this cemetery that died before April 12, 1881 were removals from other cemeteries. There are no records of re-interments or removals. The cemetery was vandalized in 2006. Many older tombstones were pushed down. No one was found responsible for the damages.

    Isaac Wycoff was killed at Kenesaw Mt. GA., July 27, 1864 which time he fell on William H. Stephenson and was carried to the rear by William and laid at the roots of a tree.  His grave is in Richmond Union Cemetery Sec D, Lot #23, age 22 yr. old.  William H. Stephenson died Oct 18, 1929 age 88 yrs old.  His grave is in the Richmond United Presbyterian Cemetery Row 6, stone #6.
