Civil War Veterans

  • General M’Cook – dies in hospital at Chicago. Was born in Steubenville in 1833, and his remains will be brought here for burial in Union Cemetery. Mayor, General Edward Mooday McCook… (Steubenville Herald Star, Sept. 10,1909)

  • Death of Colonel George W. McCook – Sketch of the deceased – His distinguished legal, military and political career- action of the Jefferson Co. Bar – arrival of the remains- time of the funeral…(Steubenville Daily, Dec. 29, 1877, a lengthy article!

The following was taken from the article in part:

    • Father of George W. McCook was Major Daniel McCook, killed during Morgan’s Raid in 1863, Buffington Island.

    • The third brother of George was General Alexander McDowell McCook, who attended his brother’s funeral.

    • The forth brother of George was General Robert McCook, assassinated by rebels in Tennessee in 1863.
    • The fifth brother of George was General Daniel McCook, who fell to the front of the battle at Kenesaw Mountain, July 18th, 1864.

    • The sixth brother was General Edward McCook, who was assaulted by Wintermute in Yankton, Decotah.

    • The seventh brother was Charley McCook, killed at the first battle of Bull’s Run.

    • The eighth brother was Captain John J. McCook, a well-known attorney in NY.

    • Two sisters of George were; Mrs. Mary Baldwin, of this city, and Mrs. Dr. Curtis, of NY.
