Irondale Cemetery

Saline Twp
Jefferson County, Ohio

Steubenville Daily Herald - December 2, 1872 p. 4

"Irondale Cemetery - We were shown today a beautiful plat of the Irondale Cemetery, recently laid out by our old worthy citizen J. D. Slack whose knowledge of landscaping is admitted to be of a superior order. This is the fifth cemetery he has laid out since he laid out the Union Cemetery adjacent to this city, which has been acknowledged by competent judges at home and from abroad to be equal to those of larger cities in artistic taste. It is proper to say here that there is not a section, lot or avenue in this extensive cemetery that has not been laid out by Mr. Slack. In 1865 he laid out Spring Hill cemetery in Wellsville of which we find the following in the Wellsville Union....In 1816 he laid out the cemetery at Beaver PA which is larger than that at Wellsville ...Mr. Slack, a gentleman residing in Steubenville Ohio. He has gone forward with his duties in a very energetic manner and at the present time has the cemetery well nigh completed. The other two cemeteries which reflect credit upon the skill of Mr. Slack are at Rochester and Cannonsburg PA are in progress and not yet completed."
