The Smithfield Children's Bethel Home was opened to accept children on November 1, 1905. It was organized as an Undenominational Benevolent Christian Home for needy children. It was founded by the Reverend and Mrs. Samuel T. Purviance and family.
The McCullough Home opened on June 3, 1914 and of the first thirty children placed in the McCullough Home, twenty-eight came from the Smithfield Bethel.
