Old Columbiana County court records sat in storage buildings and the jail basement. Some of the records date back to the beginning of the county and the formation of our state of Ohio. They tell the story of the early pioneers in Ohio, since Columbiana County was formed in 1803 when Ohio became a state. Early records for part of Mahoning and Stark County (originally part of Columbiana County) can be found in these early records.
Slowly deteriorating, these irreplaceable documents were stored in cardboard boxes in not ideal conditions. The records were not easily accessible to genealogists and others who had need to access them. The Columbiana County Archives and Research Center was formed in 2005 to help preserve these records. Finally in 2009 with a lot of faith we obtained a building just south of the courthouse to house these old court records. Now the work has begun to preserve the stored records.
What are records if you do not have an index? As the boxes are brought into our center we are indexing and filing the records to enable easy accessibility. The criminal records start in 1806 and are indexed up to 1900. The civil records (which we have saved) only start in 1892. They are indexed up to 1907. All of this work done in six months. In the near future indexes will be on our web site for researching. Other court records we have available are early divorce records and Court of Appeals Records.
The CCARC is a must for genealogical research. Our library consists of Census Records, Newspaper Collection, Church Records, Bible Records, Family Histories, Cemetery Records, Maps, Journals, Local Histories, Yearbooks, Directories, County Probate Index and Militia and Military Records. Constantly new material is being donated by wonderful people interested in preserving history. We gratefully accept material on Columbiana County.
Visiting genealogists will find a work area available with access to microfilm reader and computer station. Copying services are available. CCARC has genealogists to assist visiting researchers in locating records. Besides assisting researchers, they also fulfill mail and email requests for documents.
CCARC depends upon memberships, donations, research requests and copying fees to operate the center. The archives has a wish list of legal file folders for filing records, banker boxes to store records, legal size filing cabinets and a newer copier. We are working to make this a great research facility for Columbiana County, Ohio.
CCARC is open Tuesday from 9 AM to 6 PM and Wednesday -Friday 9 AM to 3 PM (with the exception of legal holidays and bad weather). Parking is available both on the nearby streets and in the county courthouse located north of our building.
