June 11, 2011 - Noon to 2:00 P.M. "Guest speaker and chapter member, Judy Schmidt will speak about the Civil War in relationship to The Great Locomotive Chase." Ms. Schmidt's presentation will be about her third great uncle, William Hunter Campbell.  He was one of the Andrew's Raiders who went deep into enemy territory during the Civil War to steal a train.  The Raiders planned to use this train to destroy the rail system between Atlanta and Chattanooga, thereby interupting the transport of supplies to the Rebel Army as it was stationed in Chattanooga.  Had they succeeded, the Civil War would have ended much sooner and thousands of lives would have been saved.  However, they did not succeed and seven of them were hanged.  Her uncle was one of this group. Her talk includes the history of the Andrew's Raid and also some personal information about her uncle that no one but our family has had access to. The following photos were submitted by Judy Schmidt. The image of her uncle was painted by her. Clicking on the images below will open up a larger version.
